Suzannah Fitzgerald
I completed my nurse training in 1992 at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. In 1993 I moved to London and trained in burns and plastics nursing at Charing Cross Hospital and in 1997 I moved to The Royal Marsden Hospital and obtained a BSc Hons degree in cancer nursing. I worked on the breast cancer ward in Fulham for 6 years looking after patients having breast cancer treatment.
I then relocated to Kent in 2003 after meeting my now husband Trevor. Initially I worked as a breast care nurse specialist and in 2005 I trained in breast cancer family history assessment with Guys hospital genetics unit. Since then I have been the East Kent family history service lead assessing women’s breast cancer risk, and liaising with Guy’s Hospital genetics unit to arrange referrals for genetic testing.
In 2021 I started doing mainstream genetic testing for men and women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer to see if they have inherited a genetic fault. Although it is difficult telling someone they have inherited a BRCA gene fault the fact I can tell them about BRCA Kent and they can immediately join the group for support really helps.
I co-host the east Kent BRCA Kent meetings, a group I have been involved in since the start and I feel very privileged to be able to support this wonderful group of women.
I live near Canterbury with my husband, 2 girls, a cat, a dog, some chickens and a goldfish and when I am not at work you will probably find me in my garden!
